Just a head’s up. I don’t expect any issues, as we’re UPS-protected.

The IESO will perform a voltage reduction test on Tuesday, February 7, 2012. There will be a three percent voltage reduction test between 9:00 and 10:00 EST, followed by a five percent test between 13:00 and 14:00 EST.

Had to reboot the server to clean out some old log files that don’t get rotated yearly, as well as convert to OpenRC. All services are back online. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Cogeco upgrades complete

It appears that Cogeco only needed one night to perform their maintenance, and after a little work with DNS, we appear to be back online.

Internet disconnected at midnight as projected. Brought everything back up manually around 8am. Had to update DNS because of an IP change, so that might take some time to propagate. All services should be operational otherwise.

Cogeco has sent me a letter informing me of some upcoming work being done in my neighbourhood this month, and that it might cause connection issues. I’m not sure if this is related to DOCSIS3 or if they are doing a node split, or if this is simply maintenance. The outages are projected to be between midnight and 6am, on November 22-24.

Hamiltonshells redesign complete

Over the past several years we’ve gone a long way… Starting off as a few recycled computers in 2007, and over time inheriting some recycled enterprise-class servers, and now we’ve made another huge step.

The hamiltonshells redesign project is complete.

This new server brings in a new level of performance. Never before have we had a setup with this amount of number-crunching muscle, with the reduced electricity demands everyone can enjoy.

Special thanks go to those users who have made contributions to the server fund. Your contribution has made this service worthwhile to run, as well as to use. But that’s not to say that all of our users aren’t important. Without you, this server would probably cease to exist.

So three cheers for bloomfield, let’s just hope we don’t run out of FS space for our users.

SSL certificate errors while using HTTPS services

If you get popups saying things about the site certificate, you might be interested in installing the CACert root certificates.

If you import those, you shouldn’t need to specifically add https://www.hamiltonshells.ca/ to the local list of authorized certificates.

This doesn’t apply to the status page, the router uses it’s own cert that has to be added/allowed manually. (See here.)
